Win your electricity bill for a year
28th April 2009
Fancy becoming everyone’s favourite housemate by winning a year’s electricity bill for the entire house… and getting a brand new top of the range laptop for yourself?
National charity the Electrical Safety Council is offering this prize to students who complete a 2-minute online survey at www.esc.org.uk/studentsurvey.
Homes with multiple occupants, such as student houseshares, are a higher risk environment when it comes to electrical safety than family homes or those lived in by couples or professional sharers. The Electrical Safety Council is campaigning to change this and is running this survey in a bid to find out what students think of their accommodation. All students who complete the survey at www.esc.org.uk/studentsurvey will have the chance to win this enviable prize.
Electricity is vital to modern life, but few of us consider the potential dangers that lurk within our walls. Here are some simple things that students can do to protect themselves from the potential dangers of electricity:
Don’t
- Carry out DIY repairs on anything electrical.
- Ignore worn flexes on appliances.
- Use any electrical appliance with wet hands.
- Use adaptors plugged into other adaptors.
- Overload adaptors, particularly with high current appliances such as kettles and heaters.
- Leave a laptop turned on and plugged in when not in use.
Do
- Report any problems with the electrics to your landlord straight away.
- Regularly check the condition of plugs, cables and extension leads.
- Always use a converter plug when using an appliance that has a foreign plug.
- Use appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
